Lisa Kelly cuts a pretty figure on “Ice Road Truckers”
Lisa Kelly admits she gets a kick out of seeing people do a double take when she slides out of her massive Kenworth W900 tractor-trailer.

“I don’t have to play it down,” says the pretty blond, one of the drivers followed on the new season of History’s “Ice Road Truckers.”

“I think I’ve earned where I’m at. They don’t just judge me by the cover, and I can get the job done,” she says. “I don’t need to fit the stereotype. I don’t have to be a potty mouth, chew tobacco and be 300 pounds to drive a truck.”

The show follows truckers who maneuver icy, snow-covered, narrow roads to deliver goods in Alaska 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

Kelly, who calls Wasilla home (yes, Sarah Palin’s place), is new to the cast.

“I was really excited at first,” she says, calling from a cell while driving. “I was telling everybody, even strangers I didn’t know, ‘Guess what? I’m going to be on TV.’”

Producers warned beforehand that she’d first like the camera crews, then grow to hate them, and eventually like them again. And that was exactly her experience.

“It helped me learn to be patient and enjoy the ride,” she says, adding that working with the crew takes time. “It’s kind of fun.”

Kelly has been driving big rigs for about six years. Getting in was difficult, she says, because she didn’t fit the template.

“I had to work twice as hard,” she said. “I had to pull my weight and everybody else’s and get the job done as fast, or faster.”

In the winter, Kelly drives the route depicted in this season’s “Ice Road Truckers” – airing Sunday at 9 p.m. – and in the summer, she runs out of Wasilla.

Driving the snowy highway is pretty scary at first, she says, but eventually drivers get used to it.

“The road is narrow,” she says, “and you come within inches every time. There are close calls.”

The first episode shows drivers who have run off the road, rolled their trucks, or worse.

“I really enjoy it,” she says of driving. “I like the freedom of getting out and not having a boss directly there.”

Though she does get stares.

“It’s kind of funny,” she says. “I’ve had tourists stop and take a picture. I pulled over to tighten some belts on my flatbed and I had an audience. I could feel their eyes. It’s fun. I know they’re watching and I just put on a show.”
